Traditional architecture often demands an interior to match, especially when a house is historically significant. This house in the renowned Brattle Street area of Cambridge, MA, has an Arts and Crafts influence that helped determine the look of the interior.

Remodeling architect Pete Lackey of Charles R Meyer & Associates worked with interior designer Courtney Taylor and S&H Construction to address the interior, which needed a complete overhaul. Every floor was changed to better suit modern living. The master suite and two guest suites on the second floor were designed to complement the era of the 113-year-old house.

"We didn't want the interior to be a total departure from the historic facade," says Taylor. "But at the same time, the owners did not want a stuffy, formal look. The interior needed to reflect the family's casual, relaxed way of living, hence the use of bold color elements."

The guest suite shown on these pages features spring green walls that contrast with high-gloss white millwork. Green accents also feature in the bathroom, which has green glass tile inserts in the marble flooring, and a green glass tile backsplash. Other traditional features in the bathroom include diagonal mullions on windows, a freestanding bathtub with claw feet, and a furniture-style vanity.

"The suites have a transitional styling, which could be described as an updated New England look," says Taylor.

The master suite, featured on these pages, has a more subdued ambiance. White walls and millwork are teamed with bed linen in a color Taylor describes as super-infused cream.

"For this suite, we also added a touch of light turquoise. The color appears in the upholstered banquette seating beneath the window, and reappears in the sea-foam accent tiles in the bathroom flooring."

The pearlized hexagonal floor tiles, which were all individually laid by hand, are bordered by French Vanilla marble tiles. Similar marble tiles feature on the tub deck and the walls of the shower.
