Fresh start new kitchen by Prentiss Architects
Sleek, contemporary kitchen by Prentiss Architects
One of the strongest design trends in recent times is the move toward light and airy interiors. Crisp, contemporary living spaces are replacing themed living spaces and overly ornate kitchens to bring a breath of fresh air to interiors.
This project, by architects Geoffrey Prentiss and Kozo Nozawa, is a perfect example. Designed for new owners, the remodeled interior replaces a dark, French Provincial-style kitchen that had an angular, six-sided island.
"The owners' previous house in Mexico City had a light, contemporary interior, and they wanted a similar look for their new home," the designer says. "The emphasis here is on simplicity and visual consistency we have used the same palette of materials right through the house."
Cabinetry features flush doors in rift-sawn white oak, with the grain running horizontally on doors and drawers. The ends of the two islands, and the cabinetry around the oven feature vertical graining.
"We carried the wood detailing right up to the ceiling above the doors to make all the rooms seem like very large volumes," says Prentiss. "It's a very high ceiling and we wanted to maximize the sense of space throughout."
Prentiss specified pocket doors between the kitchen and a bar and dining room. These disappear from view when open, enhancing the easy circulation between the spaces. There is also a new scullery, in a former laundry room.
White quartz countertops, Milestone multilayered plaster walls and whitewashed ash floors with a satin finish bring a reflective quality to the space, which reinforces the light, airy quality.
An existing angled bay window could not be removed without great expense, so this was worked into the design, and now opens to an outdoor kitchen-barbecue area.
