Fitting in well
Two homes positioned side by side create the look of a larger building in this suburb of mainly established and older homes
In a long-established neighbourhood, it is important that any new construction fits with the look and feel of existing houses in its vicinity.
Situated in Victoria's exclusive suburb of Canterbury, these twin residences were designed by Stonehaven Homes with an aim to merge visually with the surrounding area. Managing director David Newnham says this was achieved through careful choices of materials.
"Pitched, slate-look terracotta roofing and red-blend face brickwork, with stone and render detailing, helps make the building fit within a neighbourhood of older, larger homes. The two houses are built side by side in order to give the appearance of a single, more expansive dwelling. The street-facing landscaped buffer that separates the two homes also helps achieve this."
The two residences are identical inside and out, with clear glass entry doors looking through an internal courtyard and garden, which can be accessed from the kitchen, home office and three of the bedrooms. The fourth, master bedroom is north facing to maximise natural light.
This development won two Victorian Housing Industry Association awards for Best Integrated Housing Development and Best Medium Density Project (2-5 homes). It was also a runner-up in the Spec Home category.
