This kitchen and adjacent living areas re-imagine the open, friendly and casual pleasure in farmhouse living – sharing time & home cooked food

Designed by John Mills Architects

From the architect:

This was a new build masquerading as a restored Mt Vic beauty.

Council town planning rules dictated that the original 1890s exterior form and cladding were replicated.

However, within we envisaged a relaxed, colourful, and contemporary home.

The kitchen is centrally placed, with access to the lounge, verandah courtyard and garden.

The homeowners are a busy outdoor focussed couple who wanted a casual organic island bench, made from Tasmanian blackwood.

The island has a curved hang out space at each end, one for seating, one for standing, while the T&G facing links the island with the ceiling and walls – vintage materiality, revisited with contemporary colours and form.

A stainless cooking and refreshment area feels part of the courtyard space and allows guests to relax outside and chat to the hosts while the latter are preparing a meal.

Adjacent to this, the storage cabinets are also finished in pale veneer ply with black appliance, lighting strip and handle accents.

With the owners having lived for years in a farmhouse, this kitchen and adjacent living areas re-imagine the open, friendly and casual pleasure in sharing time, home cooked food and a cuppa with friends.

All while appreciating the walled cooks garden and views over downtown Wellington.
