A light touch

The Audi Centre, known as The Lighthouse, is architecture, building, daylighting, design, facade, line, structure, wall, gray
The Audi Centre, known as The Lighthouse, is finished in panels of 2mm-thick sheet aluminium, punched to create a diamond-shaped pattern and bent to a trapezoid profile, then anodised with a bright silver finish.

While a building may be designed to appear light, bright and sparkling, the structure behind it still needs to be strong enough to provide the necessary support.

The aluminium facade cladding on the Audi Centre was developed and installed by Architectural Roofing and Wall Cladding (ARC) to present a monolithic appearance with no obvious movement joints. The cladding also had to meet strict specifications supplied by Audi for all its showrooms around the world.

The Audi Centre, known as The Lighthouse, is finished in panels of 2mm-thick sheet aluminium, punched to create a diamond-shaped pattern and bent to a trapezoid profile, then anodised with a bright silver finish.

ARC developed and installed the perforated and folded aluminium facade panels that cover large areas of the exterior. These panels were divided into three different areas, and the substructure was designed to compensate for movements caused by the constantly changing car traffic in the service area, and the variable weight factor of cars being exhibited in the showroom. At the same time, ARC ensured that each panel lined up precisely with the frames of the large glazed elements to create the monolithic look that was part of the design brief. The panels, manufactured by Craft Metals to specifications provided by ARC, were punched to create a diamond-shaped pattern and bent to a trapezoid profile. The formed panels were then anodised with a bright silver finish to give the building a sparkling appearance. By working simultaneously in different areas of the building ARC completed its part of the project in only five months.
