This dramatic kitchen has a green heart, with eco-friendly birch ply cabinetry and sustainable stainless steel benchtops – style is equally to the fore

Designed by Margaux Word, Chroma Interiors

This kitchen is part of a home in Devonport in a space that includes a dining and lounge area.

My homeowners, taken by the prospect of eco-conscious material – cabinetry without toxins – envisioned a combination of plywood and stone and were attracted to the practicality of a benchtop in stainless steel.

Their existing concrete floor coordinated well with the black cabinetry and birch plywood.

Birch was used on the wall cupboards to visually lighten the kitchen and bring more warmth to the overall design.

Stainless steel benchtops were used at the sink and cooking stations with Caesarstone Calacatta Nuvo on the island.

The owner preferred letting the cabinetry be the hero of the kitchen, so we kept the splashback simple, with white subway tiles.

Because of the concrete slab, working with existing plumbing and gas locations to create an efficient flow was tricky.

The back bench became the sink station with the island as the work surface.

The cooking area was conveniently located nearby and on the same wall as the refrigerator and pantry.

The husband is the cleaner and prefers to do the washing up around the corner where a second sink and dishwasher are located.

Having lived in the original kitchen for years, the homeowners were excited about the conveniences that a modern kitchen brought.

Ample storage in deep drawers along with a large pantry with internal drawers was a dream come true.

New modern appliances in matt black flowed beautifully with the black cabinetry.

An open island is used for the couple to eat and entertain local friends and family at.

The visual impact of plywood lines was a focal point.

Creating symmetry with this grid maintains balance in the design.

The overall impact is dramatic while the ply lends itself to an honest and minimalist aesthetic.
