Dressed for the occasion

The owners of this contemporary home have a luxurious space to bathe and dress, thanks to Denny & Svetlik Architects

Converting an unused space into something functional and attractive requires imagination and flair, together with good design skills. That's why it pays to consult a professional.

In this Japanese-style bungalow, Denny and Svetlik Architects was asked to remodel a bathroom and a little-used sitting area adjacent to the master bedroom. Their design transformed it into a spacious new bathroom and dressing room.

Architect Steven Svetlik says the challenge was to complement the style of the house and to incorporate the existing gable-end windows.

This was overcome by incorporating two movable mirrors above the vanity. Operating like a shoji screen, they slide along a track to reveal or conceal the window behind.

A focal point of the suite is the limestone-topped vanity which is raised up on feet and designed to look like a piece of furniture.

To the right of the vanity is the dressing room with his-and-hers closet space. To the left is the fully tiled wet room, housing a large soaking tub. Set into a raised platform, this cast-iron tub is surrounded by windows, which provide views into the backyard of the property and to the bay beyond.

Located in the same space, the doorless shower is set into an alcove behind the toilet room.

Denny & Svetlik Architects specializes mainly in residential work, undertaking a wide range of projects, from remodels, such as this one, to the complete design of new homes.

"Being a small design firm, we are able to offer our clients hands-on, personalized service," says Svetlik. "One of the principals is involved in every project we do."
