Protecting New Zealand's heritage buildings is an ongoing concern for city and regional councils. It's also the reason the Hawke's Bay Opera House in Hastings has undergone several restorations in its 90-year history. The latest maintenance programme for the historic lyric theatre, which survived the 1931 earthquake, was a full exterior and interior re-paint. The restoration was overseen by architect Roger Shand, with paint colours chosen to bring out the best of the Spanish Mission design. Resene Wintergrade Lumbersider in Resene Opera House Cream with a contrasting band of Resene Karaka features on the exterior, says Resene trade representative Helen Clayton-Greene. Soffits, joinery and balustrades are painted in Resene Diesel, a red-black colour that provides a strong contrast to the cream. The Resene Wintergrade Lumbersider paint enabled painting to be carried out during the winter, when painting with normal waterborne paints would not have been possible. Resene paints also feature on the interior of the theatre. Here, Resene Zylone SpaceCote creates a subtle low sheen finish, while Resene Enamacryl Metallic adds a dramatic punch. For more details, visit a Resene ColorShop or phone 0800 Resene (0800 737 363).
