Colour story
Bright furniture and art boldly contrast dark feature walls in this new home winner of a NZIA Resene Colour Award
Colour can have a significant impact on your home's interior. It can create a mood that is quiet and relaxed, or vibrant and exciting.
The owners of this house wanted a harmonious living environment, and liked the idea of a contemporary, minimalist look, says architect Richard Middleton of Novak & Middleton Architects.
"The house was designed to be a backdrop, against which the clients could express their personality," he says.
Colour plays a key role, with panelled feature walls painted in Resene Gravel, which contrasts Resene Alabaster, the base shade used throughoutthe house. Both colours are from the Resene Whites & Neutrals chart, a collection of 42 whites, creams and complex neutrals.
The owners' collection of brightly coloured furniture, rugs and contemporary art is highlighted by the colour choices, all from the Resene Total Colour System. In the home theatre room, Resene Bastille was chosen to provide a dark, intimate atmosphere. In contrast, the entrance hallway incorporates a bright red splash of Resene Shiraz.
The adventurous use of colour resulted in the home winning a NZIA Resene Colour Award and a NZIA Resene local architecture award.
The Resene Total Colour System includes an extensive number of colours and colour selection tools from charts through to EzyPaint virtual painting software.
To help make selection a little easier, Resene has produced The Range, a fandeck of classic and contemporary hues that reflect local and international trends. For each colour on the fandeck, there are three suggestions of complementary shades that will work well together.
