A Michael Graves spa bath becomes a focal point for the open-plan master bedroom and bathroom
If the concept of a luxury apartment is based on high-end specifications, not just size, then the minimalist spa baths installed in the apartments' open-plan master suites are a defining example.
The award-winning Dreamscape bath from German manufacturer Hoesch is a perfectly spherical pool that draws the eye like a piece of sculpture. The bath was designed by leading American architect and designer Michael Graves, says Bathe's director Tim Jordan.
"Graves wanted to transform the bathroom into a bathing temple," says Jordan.
Bathe imported the baths into Australia from Germany for the project and then customised them in Bathe's factory to provide a spa facility, says Jordan.
"The designers wanted the bath to have a spa facility, but without compromising the overall appearance of the bath," says Jordan. "We designed the system to work in a large bath with a deep body of water. We also chose an air spa system, rather than a water spa system. This is more suited to a freestanding bath, as the plumbing is hidden from view."
The bath is manufactured from cast acrylic.
"It's much harder, smoother and stronger than ordinary acrylic, with strong UV stability, which is useful for free-standing baths near windows and views," says Jordan. "But the real beauty of cast acrylic is that designers can work with it to create large flat surfaces."
At 180mm wide and 440mm deep, the bath is considered by experts to be the optimum ergonomic depth for both relaxing in and reading a book in comfort.
