When a house is spacious enough to include a good-sized laundry, time spent at the planning stages will be amply rewarded both aesthetically and functionally.

The owners of this large home wanted their laundry to complement the American Colonial style of the rest of the house.

Designer Sandra Grummit of Sandra Grummitt Design says the laundry was designed to be easy to maintain. The owners also wanted it to look smart and timeless and to blend in with the decor of the rest of the home. It had to be functional, with plenty of storage and bench space.

"To create the uncluttered, clean-lined appearance the owners wanted, and to provide a generous amount of bench space, we opted for a front-loading washing machine and a matching dryer, which tuck neatly underneath the bench," says Grummitt.

"By integrating the laundry tub into the benchtop, the whole effect is streamlined and very neat and tidy."

Cupboards and drawers on both sides of the room beneath benchtop height provide plenty of easily accessible storage space, while a tall cupboard on the opposite wall provides space for larger items, such as the ironing board and brooms.

Little touches that add to the convenience and luxury of the room include a lotion dispenser over the laundry tub.

White tiled splashbacks and floor, white-painted walls and window joinery and white Melteca doors on cabinetry are teamed with a stainless steel benchtop and satin chrome D-handles.

The fresh, white colour scheme, typical of the American Colonial style, was chosen to complement the owners' recently renovated kitchen. This features lacquered cabinetry, a Corian benchtop, tiles and painted walls all in white.
