Classic by numbers

Achieving your own classical interior is simply a matter of following the rules

A universal conundrum for owners of a period home is whether or not to continue the theme with the interior design. One of the most recognisable schemes, a classical look can at first seem daunting to a novice.

Melbourne-based designer Lorna Wallace has considerable experience in designing traditional interiors, and believes there are a couple of common misconceptions about the classical scheme.

"The most typical mistakes people make when adopting a classical design scheme are making it too busy, and thinking black is classical."

"Colours are very important," says Wallace, "and the colours cannot be too bright; they need to have an element of dirt in them to be elegant or classical. Any colour with dirt in it will work. A good example is the colours available from Farrow and Ball."

Another frequent error concerns the choice of furniture. Many people believe a classical look can only be achieved through the use of antiques.

"It is important to remember that classical was once contemporary. Therefore, it is the subtlety of the mix that is important.

"Grounded furniture pieces that go right to the floor and open furniture, such as side tables with legs so you can see the floor; warms and colds; darks and lights rooms need the balance of shades, fabrics and the like," says Wallace.

One of the reasons the classical look has endured is in part due to the level of craftsmanship involved. It is paramount therefore, to choose furniture and furnishings that offer that high level of quality workmanship.

"Consideration must also be given to the Neo-classical proclivity to decorate all six surfaces of a room, with the ceiling design being reflected in the floor design either in parquetry or marquetry, or through the use of rugs. A blend of materials such as fabrics, wallpaper, painted finishes, marble and metal-coloured details such as wall sconces, would then be used to complete the look," says Wallace.
