There's a school of thought that suggests a bathroom should be a lively, refreshing space after all it is the one room everyone visits first thing in the morning. The owners of this remodeled house had no qualms about creating a vibrant and revitalizing interior for their master bathroom in a new extension. Designer Cheryl Kees Clendenon of In Detail Kitchen and Bath says the owners wanted a contemporary aesthetic the bathroom needed to complement the Mid-century modern style of the house, which was built in the '60s."We also needed to accommodate the long, narrow shape of the room," she says. The solution was to provide a cantilevered dark walnut vanity unit along one wall. This sits opposite a wall of closets."Raising the cabinetry off the floor gives it a more modern feel and helps keep the space light and airy, so it does not feel like a tunnel," the designer says. "The dark walnut gives the cabinetry a luminosity that works with the retro mango color of the walls. The contrast allows the color to pop, yet the walnut wall panels help anchor the space visually."To provide a seamless look, the wall panels were designed with no visible seams these are hidden behind the mirrors. Similarly, the white CaesarStone vanity top and backsplash appear as a continuous surface. In place of glass, the cabinetry doors feature resin with embedded bamboo rings. The circular theme is repeated in the door pulls and the vessel basins. A pebble floor and a curved Neptune Wind tub reinforce the organic look."The pebble floor covers the entire wet area at one end of the room," says Clendenon. "The floor has a gentle S shape that enhances the fluidity of the space."Striated floor and wall tiles introduce an additional, contrasting textural element.
