Changing outlook

No longer among the last design details to be considered, windows and doors are now an integral part of the overall composition of a house

Picture this: a midwinter's night and the snow is softly falling. Outdoor lighting illuminates the bare branches of the trees and the surreal blue of the snow. Inside, the lighting is dimmed and a family, warm and snug before a roaring fire, is making the most of the view.

Being able to enjoy such a close connection with the outdoors in all seasons is a relatively recent concept, and it's all thanks to the huge advances in architectural design, engineering and technology.

Not surprisingly, the desire to maximize a view or pleasant outlook has transformed the role of the windows and doors in modern houses. Architect Charles Stinson says that while windows were once among the last details to be considered in a residential design, today they form one of the most important elements.

"Modern architecture is a composition, and the windows and doors are an integral part of this their form needs to be established right from the original concept drawings."

Stinson says there is an increasing trend towards window walls, which pose new challenges for designers and engineers.

"Floor-to-ceiling windows allow you to extend your living area visually. But the purer the architecture, the more precise the measurements need to be. There is very little tolerance everything has to fit perfectly."

The need for climate control is also a factor. While double glazing is standard in most areas, some homes now feature triple glazing, which provides additional sound and thermal insulation.

"Homeowners are much more energy conscious than in the past, and are looking at ways to make their homes more energy efficient," says Stinson. "In addition to well-insulated windows, efficient mechanical heating and air conditioning systems are critical. In-floor heating is one of the more effective options that won't compromise an architectural solution. Computerized systems that automatically raise and lower blinds according to the time of day are a further bonus."

Large overhangs can prevent a home from overheating in summer, yet still allow solar energy to warm the house in winter. Stinson says extending soffits inside the house while providing a row of high windows above, will help maintain a comfortable living environment while maximizing the natural light and potential views of the sky, mountains or tree canopy.

"Authenticity is another priority," he says. "The windows need to complement the style of a house. Many clients love the look and feel of wood inside the house there is a growing trend towards more exotic woods, such as teak."

Stinson says there is also a move towards more adventurous designs mixing different window styles in creative ways. Commercial windows are another option. These can include thick Spider glass panels, or windows with butted glass and no mullions. Some commercial-style windows have a natural wood interior that ensures a home looks cozy on the inside.

Stinson says many windows particularly those with wood interiors are so beautiful, owners may not wish to cover them with drapes, which is why concealed blinds are a popular alternative.

"On the other hand, some windows are enhanced by fabrics than can give a sense of texture and warmth," he says. "Some people also like the comfort that curtains can bring."

Stinson says windows and doors are a significant cost factor in a home, but there are ways to minimize the expense. Using as many standard operable windows as possible, while varying the size of fixed windows is less expensive than having customized operable windows.
