High volume architecture makes this kitchen the centre of attention

Open-plan and on show, this social, clean-lined kitchen more than deserves the attention. Indoor-outdoor flow is accentuated by cladding finishes continued on cabinetry finishes

Designed by Dave Strachan and Maria Hosking of SGA

From the designers:

In plan, this home’s angular axis is expressed in the raised garden, gentle entry steps and deck to lead guests into the outdoor room which widens to encapsulate the pool and catch the afternoon sun.

This deliberate move was to draw the visitor into the heart of the home – the high volume kitchen and dining space, with outdoor living either side.

High level glazing to the east and west provides morning and afternoon sun to the central kitchen area and draws the eye upwards, to reveal the mature Pohutakawa seen at both end of the site.

The owners wanted a functional and social kitchen that could host family and local community gatherings with ease.

Large sliding doors peel away and the silvered vertical cedar boards continue inside within the main breezeway and on the kitchen cabinetry, to further reinforce the seamless flow between the exterior and interior living spaces.

The large cedar island with robust stainless steel benchtop is a social hub with a barstool for each grandchild.

The durable pre-finished Futura HPL cabinet fronts utilise Blum TIP-ON hardware to do away with handles and continue the clean and integrated aesthetic.

A hidden scullery is accessed through a secret door next to the fridge. Keeping the central kitchen uncluttered, the scullery includes plentiful storage, all appliances, and a secondary sink. The scullery also benefits from natural over-light from the adjacent sunlit, north-facing hallway.

A restrained interior palette of white painted ply walls, concrete, gaboon plywood, eucalyptus saligna, and silvered cedar provide a natural and relaxed atmosphere.
