Every aspect of the Auckland Grammar Sports Centre from the gym to the dedicated teaching facilities features high-tech lighting solutions, saving teachers and children both time and energy.

Audio Video Designs were approached by Liquid Automation, the custom installers for the sports centre's lighting controls, to supply an effective lighting solution. The objective was to provide simple and reliable lighting control incorporating the main sports area, the learning facilities, changing rooms and entrance foyer.

Charles Speedy, managing director of Audio Video Designs, the New Zealand distributors for Lutron, says the system had to offer master on/off control at entry and exit points and lighting presets for the gymnasium, based on specific lighting scenarios required for each particular activity.

"A Lutron lighting control panel was selected for the centre as it would ensure absolute reliability of lighting, as well as simplicity of use and control," says Speedy. "With users of the sports complex often not familiar with the building, it was essential that the lighting be intuitive to control."

Favourite gymnasium lighting presets also had to be achieved with the push of one button on a keypad. To make their use even easier, the keypads are custom-engraved with text, while back lighting of the buttons ensures the keypads are able to be easily read at night.

"Easy to programme without the need of a computer, the Lutron system features a built-in astronomical time clock that even works out sunrise and sunset times through the year," he says. "The master key pads ensured minimal wall clutter and avoided the need for large switch and dimmer panels."
