Black magic
Reflected light from the benchtops and cabinetry makes this kitchen, designed by Capell of Sydney, light and bright
Renovating a kitchen doesn't always call for completely redesigning the whole space. Sometimes kitchens that look outdated are actually well-planned but simply need a modern appearance.
In the case of this 1980s home, the existing kitchen was large and had a good layout. It flowed well into the adjoining family and dining rooms, but what it needed was a contemporary look. The owners asked kitchen designer Andrew Wright of Capell of Sydney to create an updated and practical design for their new kitchen.
"Although the old kitchen was large, one problem was that it was quite dark and gloomy. An awning over the window limited the amount of natural light. Other light came from the adjoining family room or through the glass doors from the dining room," says Wright.
"We decided to remove the old dark timber doors and drawers, replacing them with light, high-gloss, polyurethaned cabinetry to reflect and throw more light around the space," he says.
"We also selected a black granite benchtop with a gloss finish, because it is highly reflective, and even though it is a dark surface, it helps to bring extra light into the space."
To make the kitchen more practical, the cooktop and rangehood were placed on an angle across a corner, making them easier to access. Another practical touch is the appliance centre on the other side of the kitchen. The benchtop has been widened so appliances can be brought forward out of the cupboard and used without being moved.
