For designs that draw on ornate styles, such as those from the Baroque period, restraint and balance are just as important as they are for minimalist designs. The overall effect should be rich, but not overpowering. The owner of this new kitchen liked the heavy moldings and ornate carvings of the Italian Baroque style. He also wanted a kitchen that could accommodate large crowds of family and friends, says certified kitchen designer Alan Zielinski."I was aiming for a weathered, masculine and anchored look, so I selected traditional cherry wood cabinetry from Wood Mode," he says. "I wanted to emulate the characteristics of well-worn cherry, with plenty of warmth and depth, so I chose a stain that has a transparent quality, and allows the grain and natural weathering of the wood to show through. The cabinetry is enhanced with a black glaze finish that accentuates the ornate detailing." A view of a kitchen designed by Better Kitchens. The masculine look created by the strongly vertical lines of the cabinetry is softened by the curves of the range hood and the countertops, which mirror the arched entry to the dining room.A sage green, selected for the walls, ceiling soffit and furnishings, complements the honed Beaumaniere limestone of the countertops. The pale hues of these elements soften the look further. Hand- painted motifs, depicting grapes, vine leaves and wine bottles, decorate the walls and backsplash."The more you look at this kitchen, the more details you find," says Zielinski. "It's also a practical space that is suitable for caterers preparing food for parties, as well as for family cooks." A view of a kitchen designed by Better Kitchens. Zielinski planned three working areas, for cooking, clean-up and serving, with three sinks and two dishwashers. Appliances, such as the main dishwasher, trash and recycling bins, are incorporated within the cabinetry. Only the Wolf stove is visible, creating a focal point for the room. For more information, contact Better Kitchens, 7640 Milwaukee Ave, Niles, IL 60714, phone (847) 967 7070.
