Back from the brink
This heritage-listed David Jones store is once more resplendent in a new coat of Resene paint
While it can be eye-opening to see the difference a coat of paint can make to an old building, sometimes a project demands a little more attention.
Such was the case with the historic David Jones store in Bourke St, Melbourne. The major renovation project, overseen by architect Rene Garcia of ML Design, necessitated the chemical removal of many layers of previous coatings before any new painting could take place.
The old coatings had deteriorated significantly over large areas, leading to extensive degradation of the concrete substrate and corrosion of the steel reinforcement. The woodwork and decorative ironwork was also in poor condition.
Following careful surface preparation, the walls were coated in Resene Sureseal penetrating sealer to help bind together the substrate. For long-term protection, this was followed by Resene X-200 Waterproofing Membrane tinted to Resene Double Spanish White and Resene Sandcastle, both from The Range Whites & Neutrals Collection.
The timberwork and decorative ironwork were coated respectively in Resene Wood Primer and Resene Rust-Arrest. A topcoat of Resene Enamacryl waterborne enamel gloss in Resene Renegrade a brown-edged red was then applied.
