All together now
Truly the heart of the home, the kitchen has become the new living area the center for day-to-day living and entertaining. This kitchen reflects that change of focus
Open-plan kitchens, as the name suggests, have always had a close connection to living spaces. But today they have morphed into something greater the modern kitchen has become the living room.
For the designer of this remodeled kitchen, interior designer Richard Landon, this change in function is dictating a whole new design approach.
"Traditional elements, such as appliances and overhead cabinets, look out of place in a living room, so the design has to provide alternatives."
Landon says this kitchen is a prime example. Because the entire open-plan area is used for family living and entertaining, it was designed to provide a decorative, flowing space. It was also designed to maximize natural light and a great view.

"I wanted the shape of the main kitchen area to be quite anthropomorphic," says the architect. "The organic curve of the countertops is almost like an embrace."
Landon installed a 9ft-long, 3in-thick canarywood counter as a welcoming table to greet family and friends. Its visual warmth balances the long expanse of concrete counter, which features amber glass chips and curved seams of red grout. Wide-reed, hand-cast glass brings a refined touch to the wine-espresso bar and desk. Similar glass is used for the two backsplashes.
To match the colors in the canarywood, the cabinets feature African ribbon mahogany with caramelized bamboo panels. Other decorative elements include book shelves in the lower cabinetry and a high floating shelf. This wraps the room and incorporates hidden ventilation hoods for the cooktops. A ventilation hood under the floating shelf stops short of the window to ensure the chef's views are retained. A bright orange light fixture pierces the shelving at this point, visually anchoring the corner.
Additional views as well as natural light are provided by a pass-through that opens to the dining room, which has a picture window.
Even without overhead cabinets, 30in-deep cabinets provide plenty of storage.
Functionality is further enhanced by providing different zones in the kitchen. For example, there is a wet bar area outside the circle of cabinets.
"Modern appliances, such as refrigerator drawers, make it simple and easy to distribute food preparation and clean-up areas around the kitchen," says the designer.
With this in mind, Landon created a second family kitchen within an open scullery. This space incorporates the ovens, a large refrigerator, sink, dishwasher and ample storage that is easily accessed.
