Creating modern functionality within a traditional kitchen can often mean sacrificing some of its original charm. But this doesn't have to be the case, as designer Debra De Lorenzo has proven with the modification of this century-old space.

De Lorenzo says that although the location was good and the existing farmhouse had an abundance of charm, it needed a lot of work before it could meet the owner's space and practicality requirements.

"A more modern, open space was required for a combined kitchen and living area, which needed to reflect the character of the house. The owners wanted a wood-burning Rayburn stove and an electric oven. They also requested plenty of storage space," says De Lorenzo.

A central island adds functionality and separates the working areas. De Lorenzo says this was also crucial to improving useability.

"The island added a large and durable work surface. It's next to the Rayburn, so it has a heat-resistant granite benchtop."
