Forsyth Barr Stadium - engineering solutions by Aurecon
The varied engineering elements and testing of innovative design solutions for the Forsyth Barr Stadium had to fit with a tight timeline driven by the imminent Rugby World Cup.
Aurecon provided the mechanical, electrical, hydraulics, acoustics, communication, and sports lighting solutions for the project. The company's role also included civil engineering and internal environmental modelling, says the company's executive and technical director Adrian Muir.
"As it is the first natural turf indoor pitch stadium in New Zealand, one challenge was to ensure that there was sufficient natural light to maintain pitch growth. Aurecon undertook detailed computer simulations, using Ecotect software, to estimate the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) levels."
Another interesting aspect arose from the fact that the stadium was to be naturally ventilated.
"Aurecon provided CFD modelling to predict summertime temperatures and concentrations of CO2, to ensure the comfort of fans and players alike," says Muir. "The same modelling was used to predict air movement across the pitch an essential factor in grass health."
Aurecon has over 80 offices globally, and has a presence in New Zealand, Australia, Africa, South East Asia, China and the Middle East.
