Beating a destructive path through Eden Park, a demolition team on a six-week wrecking spree cleared the old South Stand from the site. At the end of this short timeframe, the original South Stand was completely gone and Fletcher's construction crew was able to move onto the site and begin setting out and digging the foundations for the new building. No team has caused this much damage in such a short timeframe on these hallowed grounds. Director of Ward Demolition Peter Ward says the rapid demolition programme enabled construction work to commence slightly ahead of the original schedule, for which Fletcher Construction was very appreciative. Equally impressively, Ward Demolition was able to recycle more than 90% of the material it demolished and removed from Eden Park, even though the project wasn't Green Star-rated. The concrete structure was completely crushed and has now been sold, and little is left from the original building in Ward Demolition's yards other than a few thousand plastic seats removed from the old stands. "A highlight of the project was driving a bobcat through the corporate boxes and not being thrown out the gate," says Ward. View of the rebuilt South Stand at Eden Park.
