Which white?
White comes in myriad shades, but thedesigner of this interior chose to inventher own custom Kelly-Moore color
White with a hint of pink, off-white, grey-white specifying white opens up a whole lot of possibilities. For the designer of this interior, the solution was to come up with her own custom Kelly-Moore color.
Dee Dee Ackerman of Ackerman Taylor Designs says she wanted a white that would be a soothing contrast to the rich walnut cabinetry in her own new home.
"I didn't want a shade that was too white, as that wouldn't provide the mellow, cozy feel I was after," she says. "The color I needed was a grey-green white, a tone that would coordinate with other elements in the interior, including fabrics."

Ackerman took her ideas to Kelly-Moore color expert Mary Lawlor, who created a paint to match in a shade she calls French Clay. The color was used on the textured plaster walls throughout the open-plan living spaces and the dramatic curved stairwell.
"I specify Kelly-Moore paints almost exclusively for my projects," says Ackerman. "And about half of these would feature custom colors prepared by Kelly-Moore."
The designer says her association with Kelly-Moore paints dates back to 1972, when she chose a Kelly-Moore paint for the exterior of her first house. Ackerman says 80% of her paint contractors also use these paints.
"Kelly-Moore manufactures a heavy, substantial paint with a high-quality finish. There is no fading or blotchiness, and unless we are using a very intense color, one coat is usually enough."
