Where there's smoke
The new Fire Service National Recruit Training Facility in Rotorua allows trainees to put theory into practise, using several realistic firefighting experiences
Fast and efficient action is of utmost importance in an emergency situation. In order to handle the pressure, fire service recruits now have the benefit of a purpose-built training facility in Rotorua.
Designed and engineered by Sinclair Knight Merz, the facility consists of three separate buildings, two of which provide a series of realistic training experiences. The Live Fire Training building comprises an inner structure of two containers where trainees can experience live fires and the dangerous flashover phenomenon, and an outer building that provides an envelope for capturing and treating the smoke. In this way, the facility does not expel any particulate into the atmosphere.
The Breathable Apparatus training building is a multi-use building that, along with other scenarios, can test trainees in full kit to navigate enclosed spaces with little or no visibility and at high temperatures.
The aesthetic design of the buildings was focused around the cultural values appropriate to a national facility. A carving by local iwi was incorporated into the design, demonstrated by the sculptural elements of the iconic entranceway.
