Freestanding cookers from Smeg highlight a significant design trend for kitchens offering vintage appeal but with the latest multifunctional oven technology.

Every once in a while, a new product comes onto the market that challenges everything that has gone before.

Smeg has built a reputation for doing exactly this the '50s-style Fab refrigerator is a good example. Today, the company continues to raise the bar for appliance design. But while Smeg understands the importance of a fully co-ordinated kitchen, the company also recognises that tastes vary and one size does not fit all.

The solution? Three distinct lines, each with a different styling that highlights a specific design trend. Each collection also reflects Smeg's belief that objects in daily use should be just as much about style and aesthetics as they are about technology and functionality. This sensitivity has already inspired Smeg's collaboration with several leading architects and designers, including Renzo Piano.

More recently, Smeg commissioned renowned Australian designer Marc Newson to design a new range. The Marc Newson collection offers cooktops and ovens in stainless steel, glass and five chromatic enamel finishes blue, green, yellow, black and white. There is a strong accent on curves and profiles uninterrupted by knobs or handles. Control is by touch, and the electronics are intuitive. The oven and hob have already been internationally recognised, winning the prestigious Good Design award judged by the Chicago Athenaeum, the Architecture & Design Museum and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

Smeg also offers the Classic and Linear collections, which as the names suggest, provide more classical and contemporary lines. Several of these products are available in black, stainless steel and white.

Technology is still at the forefront of every appliance, with the company also offering the latest developments in rangehood and induction cooktop technology.
