Well-laid plans

There's no mistaking the concept behind this ovoid powder room

Sometimes when all practical considerations are addressed, the sheer exuberance of a design concept can be allowed to take over.

This egg-shaped powder room forms part of a whole-condominium fit-out by designer Michael Wolk that has surprising feature elements throughout its interior. Initially, the walls in the powder room were designed to curve as a nod to the oval shape of the condominium footprint, with the egg idea hatching along the way.

"The concept for the curved walls also came from a need to disguise services, and in practical terms, the walls were created by direct application of plaster over a steel framework. But as soon as I showed them the drawings, the owners asked for a full-on egg motif," says Wolk. "So we introduced a marble basin shaped like an egg sliced in half, and placed a circular yellow mat that looks like a yolk on the room's epoxy white flooring."

In a room where most things are curved, only the backing for the toilet, vanity wall mirror and the shelving niche are flat. Even the toilet was chosen for its egg-like presence.
