For established retail outlets, a new, contemporary shopping mall provides an ideal opportunity to revamp their own branding. In the Sylvia Park complex, a number of prominent retailers commissioned the services of Adrian Nancekivell Design to do just that.

Design director Adrian Nancekivell says leading stores revamped by the company include Amazon, Andrea Biani, Barkers, The Gamesman, Games Workshop, Timberland and West Coast Coffee.

"The Amazon fit-out was developed to become more fashion orientated, with cleaner lines and a greater use of colour," Nancekivell says. "This not only adds vibrancy, it also helps define specific areas."

At 500m², Amazon is a large store. To help avoid a disjointed look, Nancekivell says a series of new, connecting merchandising units were designed. These can be grouped together to consolidate the displays visually, and to help move people through the store.

For the new Andrea Biani shoe boutique, Nancekivell specified a clean, simple, inviting space.

"We introduced a playful sense of scale with oversized red pendant lights. These contrast the white finishes, which include a gloss white epoxy floor that creates a seamless look. The pink carpet and the subtle floral pattern on the pendants help to feminise the store."

Nancekivell says for the Barkers fit-out (also shown on following pages), the store was given a more edgy feel, and was designed as a men's zone a place to escape the bright lights and bustle of the mall.

"Traditionally, men don't tend to spend a lot of time in a mall," he says. "So we have made this a soothing place, a retreat where they can enjoy their own space. We have deliberately put the desk at the front, so it creates a decompression zone as they move through."
