UNIFYING THEME
FEW DESIGN elements unify an apartment and its common areas as much as flooring. In the case of Volt on Queen, the architects used tiling as a key material throughout the two towers.
Specialist tiling company Ceramstone was commissioned to tile the 416 apartments, and common areas. Acoustic insulation and waterproofing were key elements prior to tiling, says Ceramstone's project manager Ian Stewart.
"In Auckland's climate, external waterproofing is always a challenge. With hundreds of external balconies to acoustically treat, waterproof and tile at Volt, we needed all our expertise to complete the works on time."
Ceramstone supplied a variety of porcelain and ceramic tiles to the project. Common and pool areas were tiled using a large format 600mm x 300mm rectified porcelain tile. The large 450m² courtyard was finished with a 400mm x 400mm paver, laid on a plaster bed.
"Our quality assurance system and co-operative site team meant we could achieve the essential standards within the timeframes required," says Stewart. "We have successfully completed very large projects such as these apartments and the Vector Arena each project has its own challenges and unique product requirements."
The company specialises in providing a one-stop shop, says Stewart. "We promote only the best acoustic, waterproofing and tiling components that perform on such large projects."
