The University of Canberra has one of the world's leading centres for social and economic modelling the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM). The centre's scope has been expanded recently to include not only social and economic modelling, but also ecology, environment and health.

Not surprising, the university needed to walk the talk when it came to designing and building the International Microsimulation Centre, a new 2000m² facility to house NATSEM. Consequently, the project has become the first education facility in the ACT to be awarded a 5-Star Green Star rating by the Green Building Council of Australia.

Michael Tolhurst of Daryl Jackson Alastair Swayn says the firm envisaged that the outdoor spaces would provide a welcome breakout area for both staff and conference goers.

"The architecture of the complex uses simple forms clad in Rheinzink titanium zinc in a pre-weathered standing seam profile, and Rheinzink titanium in Graphite Grey in a H25 cassette profile," Tolhurst says. "The crisp detailing and contrasting tones complement the contemporary design of the building and the landscaping."

Tolhurst says the Rheinzink titanium zinc, which was supplied by Craft Metals, was also chosen for its 100% recyclability, and its ability to weather naturally without losing its character.

"The fact that it is maintenance free also made it a particularly good choice for this project."

The installation by Architectural Roofing and Wall Cladding ensured that the end result was true to the original concept.

Rheinzink titanium zinc is 99.99% pure zinc and can be applied to intricate and innovative architectural elements, for both exterior and interior applications. Craft Metals' workshop and skilled tradespeople can shape the material as required, for even the most difficult projects.

Craft Metals also supplies and forms a comprehensive range of architectural copper and aluminium metals. These can be used for roofing, cladding and perforated screening applications, for both commercial and residential projects.

The support team at Craft Metals has a high level of architectural knowledge and can provide more information and detailed technical assistance.
