Stone pillars create a contemporary look at the front entrance to the home

Two panels surround a picture window. The schist was supplied and installed by Daniel Hitchcock Stonemasonry.

South Island schist is used to create a sense of drama in the main entry to the home, while also relating to the landscape of the nearby beach. Two panels of schist reach to roof height on either side of the doorway, and a further two 4.5m-high panels frame a floor-to-ceiling window to the left of the entry.

Daniel Hitchcock Stonemasonry supplied the stone and constructed these features. Installing the panels around the windows was a challenge, as space had to be allowed for the panes to be replaced if broken. The solution was to leave a small 45mm gap between the window and the stone. Grinders were needed to form a tidy right-angle corner which allows the glass to be removed if needed.
