Every older house has a history, but some are just more interesting than others. This house falls into the former category it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright's chief draftsman on his retirement. The house's connection with the famous architect has long intrigued designer Stephen Lanak, who has helped remodel the entire property over several years."The master suite, which is the most recent area to be remodeled, is in the original part of the house, which features the typical low-pitched roof and large eaves," Lanak says. "Because the owners are now empty-nesters, there was an opportunity to take one of the adjacent bedrooms and reorganize the entire space to create a generous and luxurious private sanctuary."The suite now comprises two separate bathroom areas a small room with a vanity and toilet, and a large bathroom with freestanding tub and shower. All the spaces, from the master bedroom to the closets beyond the bathroom, are interconnected through sliding translucent acrylic doors. cabinetry in this remodeled bathroom is done with high-end metallic automotive paint. "These doors are a crucial element of the design," says the designer. "They feature a layer of a linen-style fabric sandwiched between two sheets of acrylic material. This produces a matte, textural finish, and ensures the doors are lightweight and easy to operate. As well, the light shows through the doors to the linking passage, including natural light from a skylight in the smaller bathroom."Lanak says the mahogany trim on the doors, and edging the soffits, echoes the wood in other areas of the house."Soffits in the living areas are fully faced with mahogany. This is a more subtle, refined version that still makes a visual connection," says the designer. "An asymmetrical pattern was specified for several doors, to provide something a little unexpected and interesting."The vanities also vary from the norm, says Lanak. cabinetry in this remodeled bathroom is done with high-end metallic automotive paint. "The cabinets feature a hand-polished Cinnamon Pearl metallic automotive paint finish, with curled maple wood detailing, which was chosen for its interesting grain."Quartz vanity tops and contemporary tub fixtures enhance the modernity. Other features include off-white porcelain tiles, and glass mosaic strips inspired by designs from the Frank Lloyd Wright studio.
