Treasure island
A sculptural island leads the design charge in this crisp white and wood kitchen, where the cabinetry echoes its gleaming star feature
Designed by Morgan Cronin, Cronin Kitchens
From the designer:
Brief
This kitchen forms part of a transformative renovation of a large family home, jointly owned by a surgeon and an architect.
At our initial meeting, the architect set the stage when he showed me plans of his overall design, which included an indicative shape for the proposed kitchen island.
I liked his concept, so used it as a starting point for my design.
Natural looking, large black floor tiles and oak bar stools were specified.

Designer’s response
Given the curves, Corian was the clear choice of material to use for construction of this complex island.
To visually simplify the design and to allow the curves to be the standout feature, the cabinetry is cohesively matched to the Corian.
The cabinetry is both angular and curved to mimic the shape of the island.
Where possible, white appliances (ovens and induction top) were specified, while the remainder were integrated to create a seamless look.
The inspiration for the timber highlights came from the owner’s choice of barstools.
The colour and grain of the light oak adds a warmth and natural texture to an otherwise stark landscape.
The timber is expressed as oak-look tiles in the island seating recess and on the splashback, as well as the open shelving in the scullery.
