Total solution
Integrated engineering and building solutions, from Baulderstone Hornibrook, were used on Bio21
A construction project such as Bio21 requires the capabilities of a wide range of experienced contractors.
Baulderstone Hornibrook, one of the largest integrated engineering, building and service providers in Australia, has a long history of undertaking technically demanding projects, such as Bio21, says senior project manager, Spiro Mirgiannis.
"This $100m facility, with its 23,000m² of floor area, is designed to function as a whole, with integrated structure, services and finishes," he says.
To reduce construction time, some components, such as the vibration controlled structure, toilet pods, link bridges, facade components, laboratory bench system and light fittings, were prefabricated off-site.
The steel-framed suspended-atrium breakout structures, roof portals and flue enclosures were pre-framed off-site into large transportable components. The pair of lift cores was delivered in only four parts, each three levels high.
The horizontal and vertical planes that characterise the building required structural engineering solutions. The atrium walls and ground floor facade are suspended using a tension system. These tension elements are visible, showing the structural system.
