Top of the world
At 92 storeys, it's the tallest residential building in the world. Melbourne's Eureka Tower is also scaling new heights in apartment design and fit-out
Specialist finishes are a feature of Eureka Tower. Not only do they help define key architectural features, they also add visual interest to the facade.
Fabcon, a specialist precast concrete manufacturer, was contracted to provide special precast concrete finishes and other precast work to both the tower and the adjacent Travelodge Building.
Director Bruno Iorlano says the architect required a simulated raw bluestone finish to precast panels on the lower areas of the tower. This was achieved with a concrete mix developed by Fabcon using crushed local bluestone and granite aggregates with black charcoal coloured oxide.
"The panel surface was sandblasted, then acid washed to expose the aggregates," Iorlano says.
The spandrel precast concrete for the apartment balconies was manufactured with a similar concrete mix, and treated with a light acid wash to give a fine sand-textured finish.
Contrasting white panels on the podium were manufactured using local quartz aggregates and off-white cement with a very light acid wash.
