The joys of reading

One of the parameters in any local government project funded by public money is the requirement to establish, and then meet, a conservative and yet realistic budget.

As the construction contractor for the Birkenhead Library and Civic Centre, Mainzeal's brief was to ensure best value for money was achieved. Low-maintenance, durable materials and finishes were specified for the project. Project manager Murray Svensen and site manager Murray Gibson of Mainzeal worked with the architect to ensure the design and detailing were understood and implemented. This ensured a smooth construction programme within budget and with minimum inconvenience to nearby businesses and residents.

Innovative features such as a glazed front facade featuring timber fins made from sustainable materials help to create a sculptural building with practical and environmentally friendly systems that is expected to make a positive contribution to the local district.

Covering two levels and a mezzanine floor, the library has a total area of approximately 2680m². The basement provides for carparking, book returns, an entrance and utilities, while the ground level has a second public entry, community rooms and library space. The children's area, study spaces and another meeting room are on the mezzanine. In addition, there is on-site undercover carparking for 31 cars, plus courier spaces and bicycle racks.
