Novotel Auckland - painted and plastered by Sharp Decorating
The high standard of specification demanded for the hotel extended to the quality of the wall and ceiling surfaces. Sharp Decorating Services Ltd was contracted to plaster, paint and apply the specialist wall coverings to all areas, including guest rooms, lobbies, stairwells, plant rooms, maids' rooms, meeting rooms and the conference centre.
Project manager Cole Sharp says the company was advised right from the outset that quality control was an essential aspect of the project. "We introduced a site-specific quality assurance (QA) system to monitor and check the work of our stoppers and painters at every stage. This helped ensure the overall finish exceeded expectations."
Cole Sharp says the Novotel project was the largest undertaken by Sharp Decorating, and a tight programme made it particularly challenging. To complete the work in the allotted timeframe, the company separated the painting team into three groups. The first team was in control of applying sealer coats and preparation. A second team applied the second and third coats to all surfaces, and the third, smaller more experienced team, undertook the final detail and touch-up work once the other trades had completed their work.
Resene water-based, low-VOC paints were specified for all the interior finishes, ensuring the sustainability criteria were met. The feature wallcovering on the ground floor was supplied by Design Source, and the GlassTex wallcovering in the hallways was supplied by Swinsons.
