Despite the  PwC Centre's early setbacks and challenging site conditions, L T McGuinness delivered a stunning, well balanced five storey building at a prime Wellington waterfront location.

The PwC Centre’s prominent position on Wellington’s waterfront posed one of its greatest challenges - it is on reclaimed land.

A complex two-year construction programme included ground remediation and creation of an underground basement that was below the water line and avoided susceptibility to significant tidal movements.

The structure and façade works were undertaken along with the base build and multiple tenant fit outs. The building is designed to be 180% of the New Building Standard.

An innovation to help attain this high score is the use of Continuous Flight Augured Piling (CFA). It’s a foundation structure that is the first of its kind to be built in New Zealand.

Judges comments

The development of the PWC Centre, on Wellington’s Waterfront was one of the greatest challenges the project team had ever undertaken.

"Without the entire team rolling up their sleeves, and putting their backs behind the project, they may not have achieved the deadlines set.”

This project had some early setbacks including project delays and challenging inherent ground conditions at the site. Despite this, L T McGuinness delivered a stunning, well balanced, award-winning five storey building at a prime Wellington waterfront location.

The structure and façade works were undertaken along architecture, building, ceiling, daylighting, design, floor, flooring, house, interior design, lobby, office, room, brown

Judges were impressed with the PwC Centre base isolation foundation design, which is world-leading in terms of structural engineering design. The building has also met an NBS / Seismic rating of 180%.

The project team faced numerous challenges, including below sea level conditions, the installation of 1,200 Continuous Flight Augured piles (a first in NZ) and designing to a five Star Green rating.

Despite all the challenges, the building was completed on time, and within forecasted budgets.

This team work particularly impressed the judges. It demonstrated a great level of trust, collaboration and a high standard of workmanship across all trades.

The completed building was a credit to all involved and shows how a team approach will always provide a winning result.
