Basking in natural light and with a metal panel depicting a pair of close wood pigeons, this airy kitchen reflects the character of its owner couple

Designed by Marcus Stufkens, Stufkens+Chambers Architects

From the architect:

This forever home responds to the elderly homeowners' needs for a single level home that could accommodate their mobility constraints.

The house sits elevated above its tussock filled site, in a manner allowing it to be anchored to the site as well as having a sense of floating above it.

Engagement with the exterior space from the internal spaces was a critical brief item and the result reflects a natural extension of the kitchen, living and bedroom areas.

The interiors are texturally rich, from the Birch ply linings to the kitchen with the cool smoothness of the Caesarstone Oyster grey engineered stone bench and the oak timber flooring..

The kitchen is open and sun drenched.

Cinder soft-touch Laminex acrylic fronts were selected for the cabinetry while framing and accentuating the natural beauty of the surrounding Birch Ply wall linings.

The splash of green to the feature laser-cut island metal panel acknowledges the kitchen as the central hub of the house but also reflects the close bond and character of the owners.

Overhead, the ceiling incorporates a slim 13mm recessed strip that’s accentuated with a matt black surface and Prolux black/gold reflector task lighting.

Kitchen joinery is sleek with continuous horizontal recesses functioning as handles and feature shelf recesses for display.

The hexagonal tiled splashback forms a textural diversion within the clean-lined design.

The pantry and laundry are hidden but also can be opened up by full height cavity sliders as seamless extensions to the kitchen.

Interior-exterior flow is enhanced by the opening-up of the living and kitchen areas to an internal sun-drenched decks – creating additional natural light.

The kitchen has been orientated and positioned to take best advantage of solar gain and sunlight admittance.

The outlook views from key living areas are varied and enhanced – creating healthy internal environment and enhancing the wellbeing for occupants.
