Sun, surf and sand
The kitchen in this modern beach house features durable materials that complement the view beyond

Summer holidays at the bach are all about relaxation easy meals and laid-back living are the order of the day.
This kitchen, in a modern beach house in the Bay of Plenty, was designed with such a lifestyle in mind. As well as being easy to work in, the kitchen needed to be low maintenance, says designer Sheryl Stuart of Mastercraft Kitchens for Living in Tauranga.
"Because it is a holiday home, my clients wanted to use practical products that wouldn't cost the earth."
Stuart says that the kitchen also needed to provide a seating and eating area.

Formica Melteca cabinets in Rocksalt from The Laminex Group were specified these include a tall pantry and crockery unit, and doors for the integrated appliances.
"With their clean, minimal lines, the units are more like furniture than cabinetry," says the designer.
The cabinets are paired with a stainless steel island top and high-pressure Formica benchtops in Carbon Moss. The same laminate features on a drop-down table that extends from the island.
"The colours of the laminates on the cabinetry and benchtops are reminiscent of the surf and the sand," says Stuart. "Formica Melteca is available in a range of textures and colours, including neutral colours in contemporary fashion tones. This was exactly what we needed to create the modern beach bach feel we wanted for this kitchen."

To ensure there is plenty of bench space, the hob bench flows beneath the bifolding doors of the on-bench pantry.
