Novotel Auckland - concrete columns by Concretec New Zealand
The attention to detail that defines the entry and interior of the Novotel Auckland Airport hotel is also evident on the exterior. Warren and Mahoney designed intricate structural concrete columns, which were manufactured by Concretec New Zealand, a company that specialises in the supply of complex architectural and structural precast concrete for projects throughout Auckland.
Concretec director Stefan Young says the tall structural concrete columns on the sides and ends of the building have a unique architectural profile, with wings that appear to fold back behind the glass. "The main challenge of this project to achieve an architectural finish with an extremely tight structural tolerance," he says. "The project involved producing intricate drawings, manufacturing the moulds and then producing a high-quality product."
Concretec manufactured all the structural concrete on the exterior of the building, from the third level up, and also manufactured the precast concrete stairs inside the hotel. This totalled 168 columns, 40 panels and 27 flights of stairs.
Young says Concretec welcomes any challenge, and has achieved top results on projects passed over by other companies. Concretec has worked closely with architects and construction companies to supply high-profile product, including feature panels, on other key projects, including Eden Park and the Britomart East precinct.
