Innovative building design can have its challenges and the new halls of residence building on Whitaker place was no exception. The erection of the steel structure uncovered some unique demands that had to be overcome.George Grant Engineering supplied and built the skeletal steel form that supports the new halls, says general manager Scott Delacey. View of steel structure. "The site was awkward in terms of getting materials down there one of the reasons that the building was built in this modular-pod fashion."And this method of construction also impacted on our role. Usually a structure built floor-by-floor would allow us to operate on the next level from the last one working on the succeeding stage from ladders. Here, because the pods stack three-high between floors, the support floors occur only every 12m not 3m so we had to utilise personnel cages on cranes to access the next floorplate up." "Overall, this was a challenging and rewarding project for George Grant Engineering, and we were pleased to be involved with its construction."For details, contact George Grant Engineering, PO Box 142, Takanini, South Auckland 2245, phone (09) 295 0550, fax (09) 298 9909.
