Star performer Claudelands redevelopment supported by Hamilton City Council
Claudelands redevelopment supported by Hamilton City Council
City councils have a mandate to lead by example, and this extends to the design and construction of council buildings.
In redeveloping Claudelands sustainability was a major focus for Hamilton City Council, says Murray Jeffrey, director of business development and marketing for event facilities.
"Considered to be a leading demonstration of how well sustainable design can work for a building, the environment and the community, Claudelands has incorporated ESD elements into all phases of the project, from the design and construction through to the ongoing operation of the venue," he says.
Recycling material from the original structure, retaining excavated earth on site, and a design that minimises water and energy consumption are key features of the project.
But Claudelands is also setting a benchmark in the provision of high-end events centre facilities. This has led to a growing number of international events coming to Hamilton, with the result that the city's profile has grown significantly.
"Claudelands has raised the bar for Hamilton, allowing us to bring business and entertainment to the city that in the past we had no chance of securing," says Jeffrey. "Claudelands Arena, in particular, with its boutique design and atmosphere, is a great venue for promoters and audiences. It has provided Hamilton with a unique opportunity to grow the entertainment and lifestyle options for our city."
Fully air conditioned and acoustically designed, the arena features a C-shaped bowl, with seating for 5000, including 1400 retractable seats. The total capacity is 6000 in a general admission mode.
"The stage has been built to international specifications; and the sports floor also meets international standards," says Jeffrey.
Claudelands has already been host to a number of large-scale events and conferences, including a music festival, international conferences and trade shows.
