With so much plant on the roof requiring access for upkeep and periodical cleaning, worker safety was a central consideration for Westfield.

PBI Height Safety supplied, installed and certified all height-safety requirements for the roof, including safety line systems, hand rails, ladders and personal protective equipment to work with the Monkey Toe walkways.

The company installed the Evolution permanent static safety line system in conjunction with Monkey Toe's walkways and handrails. Workers are attached to the cable by a lanyard to their harness, meaning they are never in danger of falling from the two-level high roof.

As with the Monkey Toe system, the Evolution safety system uses energy-absorbing properties enabling it to be surface-mounted directly to the roof without any additional structural strengthening required, says the managing director.

"The Evolution product allows users to traverse the full length of each cable without disconnecting, maximising roof coverage from any given line," he says. "PBI installed five Evolution safety-line systems, ranging from 25m to 58m in length. Most safety lines have more than one corner bracket, enabling easy coverage to even the outermost or tricky maintenance areas.
