Monkey Toe roof systems provided versatile roof access systems that wouldn't affect the integrity of the roof membrane

Given the size of the site and nature of the building there was a requirement for numerous pieces of large equipment to be situated across the roof. Choosing an innovative access walkway system that rests lightly on the roofing surface offered several advantages.

The Monkey Toe roof access and mounting system has supplied in excess of 500m of walkway to the Westfield Riccarton site to support all the rooftop plant. The walkways serve primarily as service paths and run to all four corners of the roof.

Existing building structure is used to support these units avoiding the need to erect large structural platforms that can incur a substantial construction expense," says sales manager of Monkey Toe Systems, Budd Prestidge.

"Conventional structural platforms may also become a maintenance issue, incurring roof leaks and wear and tear," says Prestidge. "This is the only walkway system developed with roof protection as the main governing factor in the design stages."

Monkey Toe walkway spans 2.4m to 3m between fixings and these fixing points utilise the standard monkey toe roofing clip. The walkway platform is 300mm above the roof to keep all foot traffic exclusively to the walkway, to allow for rain washing and easy mechanical cleaning. This system transfers the walkway loads directly to the purlin, never to the roofing membrane.
