Southern star rises

Even the most dramatic, award-winning shop design needs experienced, intuitive shopfitters to bring it to life. The gleaming Sony Style store at Westfield Riccarton was a case in point.

Dimension Shop fitters undertook several fit-outs at Westfield's new mall electronics retailer Sony Style, international stationery chain kikki.K, women's fashion boutiques Identity and Pagani, and menswear retailers yd. and Tarocash.

The Sony Style store has won Gold at the Best Awards 2009 from the Designers Institute of New Zealand, says Dimension's director Nick Turpin.

"While the dashing ceiling angles catch the eye, an important aspect of the space was the introduction of solid-surface, polymer Hi-Mac wall units," says Turpin. "This store is more a showcase of Sony products than a purely retail outlet. For this reason, display fittings had to be immaculate, and the Hi-Mac units form niches to show off specific products to best effect."

The installations were as varied as they were many. Dimension's brief for kikki.K followed international preset design lines, with local touches, such as a native wood panel. The overall decor called for white shelves with a white backdrop and white floors, all letting the merchandise speak for itself.

"Besides following, and sometimes interpreting the designers' requests and requirements, we take on other work for our clients," says Turpin. "For Australian firms kikki.K, yd. and Tarocash, we also handled aspects such as building consents and receiving deliveries of fixtures difficult to oversee from across the Tasman."
