Southern belle
With its decorative, gilt-edged mirror and hand-painted walls, this powder room evokes nostalgia for a bygone era
The distinctive Southern character and the woodland setting of this remodeled, traditional square-fronted house determined the look of the interior right down to the powder room.
The house was remodeled to better reflect the owners' personal taste, the gracious look of the exterior, and the picturesque setting. A love of color and a preference for a bright, airy interior also helped inspire the palette, say the owners.

"The house had been remodeled previously, but the entire interior was beige. The warm pastel shades that now feature throughout have long been favorite colors they were originally inspired by a collection of lithographs by Jonna White."
Interior designer Norellen Stokley introduced a soft, buttery yellow shade to the hallway and continued this in the powder room, adding botanical drawings hand-painted by San Francisco artist Letitia Samonte.
"The tree of life imagery was inspired by a Brunschwig & Fils wallpaper that is now out of print," says Stokley. "We chose colors that would match the rest of the interior, and deliberately positioned a tree on each wall, extending to the ceiling. The Biedermeier-style bird's-eye maple vanity and ornate gilt mirror were hand-painted to match."
