Solid connections
Indoors flows into outdoors in this masonry home, created through a tried-and-tested working relationship between architectural designer and builder
Often, the only predictable factor in Auckland's weather patterns is that they are entirely unpredictable.
While the owners of this home requested plenty of outdoor living space, architectural designer Barry Northcott of Dimension Design saw it was necessary to be able to shelter under cover in case of a turn in the weather. A roofed alfresco dining area, complete with a fireplace, was created to fulfil this need, says Northcott.
"We also created a space for enjoying the morning sun, which can be accessed through screen doors from the kitchen. This space is protected from the wind and the road by a honed blockwork wall, which also makes an aesthetic contrast with the masonry construction of the rest of the house."
Northcott worked with Warren Pointon, director of construction company Town & Country Residential. The two companies often join forces on masonry construction projects, says Northcott.
"Due to its durability and strength, masonry gives peace of mind to homeowners. It can also be used to create a classic or a contemporary aesthetic."
The master bedroom in this home overlooks the courtyard with a frameless glass balcony that gets all-day sun.
