For more than two million years, the human race has recognised the value of building in stone. Some of these early structures are still standing testament to this natural material's durability.

These days, stone is more commonly used in modern homes especially as floor tiles, indoors and out.

Homestone director Clive Pegden says his company supplies and distributes more than 40 types of natural stone tiles to builders, architects and homeowners throughout New Zealand. These can be used in courtyards, gardens, terraces, entrances, interiors, around swimming pools and to create special features.

Tiles are tough and long-lasting, he says, and their simple, solid look ensures they are enduring in terms of style.

"Natural stone offers a high standard of consistency from tile to tile, and its non-slip qualities make it a safe flooring option. It can be highly polished and is easy to clean."

The Homestone range includes sandstone, limestone, basalt stone, flamed granite and travertine. All come in matt, semi-gloss and highly honed finishes. A recent addition to the range is wall cladding in various colours (see opposite).
