Materials that enhance a sense of tranquility are vital for a bathroom designed to be a private sanctuary.

For this master bathroom, in a new addition to a traditionally styled country cottage, Carrara marble was chosen to impart a tranquil and luxurious spa-like environment.

Designer Ian Mentasti of Stephen Terhune Woodworking says the marble, and the design of the cabinetry, also echo the materials and design elements in the kitchen.

"The owner loves white Carrara marble, and wanted to carry this right through the house," says Mentasti. "It provides visual continuity, and is really the star of the show."

But it is the way the marble is used in the bathroom that enhances the sense of luxury. The designer specified a range of different-sized tile modules, which create a subtle detailing that reinforces the refined look.

For example, the shower room features 4 x 6in tiles on the lower walls, with smaller 1½ x 3in tiles on top. In between, a band of glass mosaic tiles in a soft teal color adds a decorative touch and incorporates a narrow shelf for soaps and shampoos.

The floor is also tiled, and slabs of Carrara marble are featured on the vanity tops and tub surround, which extends through to the shower room to create a bench seat.

The symmetrical cabinets are painted white and have recessed panel doors, with traditional beading just like the cabinets in the kitchen. They also mimic another key design element. The his-and-hers cabinets both sit on small feet and protrude slightly into the bathroom.

"This gives the vanities the look of individual pieces of furniture," says Mentasti.

In keeping with the cottage feel of the architecture, there are white-painted shutters, rather than curtains, over the windows.

Other special features of the bathroom include a choice of three showerheads.
